Participate in an Interview

The east coast project aims to investigate teachers' experiences of being bullied by students and/or their parents in schools Victoria, Queensland, Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania or New South Wales. It aims to answer the following questions
  • How prevalent is student bullying and harassment of teachers?
  • What kind of behaviours are most commonly encountered?
  • What role does SES, school sector and school location (urban vs rural) play in the incidence and experience of teacher targeted bullying and harassment?
  • What in-school policies are currently available to tackle teacher targeted bullying and harassment? and
  • To what level are policies aiming to tackle teacher targeted bullying and harassment effective?

What is involved in my participation

We plan to conduct up to 60 interviews via an online medium  (zoom)  The interviews are one-on-one in-depth discussions with one of our researchers to discuss your experiences of being bullied or harassed by students and/or their parents, your knowledge of policies aiming to address teacher bullying and harassment and the effectiveness of these policies. The interview will involve approximately one hour of your time and will be video recorded (via zoom) for analysis. The information you share will be kept confidential and your anonymity will be maintained through the use of pseudonyms.

How do I express interest in participating?

To participate, you will need to email one of our researchers via the request form above, to express your interest and arrange an interview time.  You will be required to agree to your participation verbally or send the interviewer a signed copy of the participant consent form on the day of your interview before an interview can begin.

Are there any risks if I participate?

Due to the sensitive nature of the topic, there is a possibility that you may experience some emotional distress in recounting experiences which you may have found uncomfortable. To ensure your wellbeing, the following protective measures will be taken by the researchers:
  • The researchers conducting interviews are experienced researchers and will be alert to signs of distress by monitoring body language and will be verbally checking in with you about how you are feeling so as to avoid distress. If distress is identified, you will be offered time out from the interview, or to end the interview if need be without prejudice.
  • At the beginning of the interview, the research will ask for the number of an emergency contact person (this should be arranged by you prior to research beginning) who will be immediately contacted for assistance if you become distressed. Upon the end of the interview the emergency contact number will be destroyed to preserve their confidentiality.
  • If the unlikely event that an emergency situation arises, and the researcher is unable to contact the emergency contact person, the researcher reserves the right to call 000 emergency services.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality will be maintained at every stage of the research process, and all data provided by you will be de-identified. However, if you make a disclosure of an event where a child may be perceived to be at risk under the children’s protection act, researchers reserve the right to disclose this information.

How will my data be used?

The results of this study will be reported and published after the research process. Publication may be in a journal or as a paper presented at a conference or professional meeting, workshop, book chapter or report. The information will be made available to you in these formats at your request. Your name and any other identifying information will not be used in any of these documents. Your personal data from interviews will also be made available to you on request. As a follow up to this study the researchers plan to embark on a larger second stage of this project to investigate teacher's experiences of bullying or harassment more widely in 2019. As such, we may utilise your data in future for the purposes of comparing responses. In accordance with ethical guidelines, all information will be securely stored for five years and then destroyed.
